EMOM stands for every minute on the minute. The client starts a set at the top of each minute, does the prescribed work, and rests for whatever is left of that minute. Rest is never written into the program — it is whatever the client earns by working faster.
A twelve-minute EMOM of five power cleans is twelve sets of five, starting at 0:00, 1:00, 2:00 and so on. A set that takes 25 seconds buys 35 seconds of rest. A set that takes 45 seconds buys 15.
What the format actually does
Session length is fixed before the client starts. A 12-minute EMOM takes 12 minutes, not "12 minutes plus however long they scroll between sets" — which matters for a client training in a 45-minute lunch window.
Rest self-regulates. As fatigue accumulates the sets slow down, so the rest shrinks exactly when the client would otherwise be taking longer.
And density becomes the thing you progress. Same load, same number of minutes, more reps inside each one — a clean lever for progressive overload on movements where adding weight is not the goal.
Choosing the work-to-rest split
The only real decision when you write an EMOM is how much of the minute the work takes.

The usual mistake is setting reps off what the client can do in one fresh set. Take a third off that number: a client who manages 20 unbroken swings gets eight to ten per minute, not fifteen. The first three or four rounds are meant to look easy. If minute three is already ugly, the prescription was wrong.
Count the setup, too. Walking to the rower, resetting the damper, loading a bar — that is time inside the minute, and it can sink a prescription in a client's garage that works fine in your gym.
When a client cannot finish inside the minute
This is where EMOMs fall apart remotely: the client is at 0:52 with two reps left and no instruction. Decide the rule when you write the session, not when they message you afterwards. The three fixes, in order:
Cut the reps, keep the load and the minutes. Nine out of ten failed EMOMs are just over-prescribed.
Widen the window. Every 90 seconds or every two minutes (E2MOM) is still an EMOM in everything but name, and it is the right call for heavy strength work — three squats at 80% needs a two-minute window, not sixty seconds.
Give a miss rule in advance. "If you don't finish the reps, skip the next minute and pick it back up after." A client with that written into the session finishes it. A client without it abandons the workout and tells you it was too hard.
That last one is a delivery problem more than a programming one. In Fitsly's training builder you set a section's format to Interval, so the client app runs a built-in timer through it and every set carries a time, which is what stops the session becoming "some sets, some rest, roughly".
EMOM or straight sets
Straight sets win whenever the session depends on the quality of one set: top-end strength, a heavy triple, anything needing three to five minutes of genuine recovery before the load can be expressed again. A set of four at RPE 9 with 40 seconds rest is conditioning work labelled as strength work.
EMOMs win when the work is submaximal and repeatable, when volume matters more than peak output, and when the session has to fit a fixed slot — accessory volume, conditioning, and any client who drifts if you leave rest to their judgement. The two mix well: heavy squats on straight sets, then an eight-minute EMOM of split squats and rows.
Where they sit in a block
Within a mesocycle, change one variable per week: a rep per minute, two more minutes, more load, or a shorter window. Move reps and load together and you learn nothing when the client stalls.
Across a macrocycle, EMOM volume tends to rise through general preparation and fall away as a client approaches a strength peak, where the rest is the point of the session. For the same conditioning stimulus without a fixed clock, AMRAP work is the usual alternative.
