To create a custom food, open the Foods page under Nutrition, switch to the Custom foods tab, click New food, and fill in the form.

Steps

  1. In the sidebar, open Nutrition and select Foods.
  2. Switch to the Custom foods tab.
  3. Click New food to open the Add new food modal.
  4. Enter a Food name.
  5. Optionally enter a Brand.
  6. Set the Serving size and Serving unit.
  7. Enter Calories, Protein, Carbs, and Fats for that serving.
  8. Optionally expand Micronutrients (optional) and fill in any of: saturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, monounsaturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, potassium, fiber, sugar, added sugars, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, calcium, iron.
  9. Optionally add Notes and a Food image.
  10. Click Create Food. You will see the confirmation "Your food item was created."

Tip: copy from the food database instead of starting blank

If a similar food already exists in the food database, you can copy it into your custom foods and edit only the values you need.

  1. Open the Food database tab on the Foods page.
  2. Open the food you want to start from.
  3. Click Copy to Custom.
  4. Open the copied food on the Custom foods tab and edit it.

Letting clients see your custom foods

Custom foods do not appear in client food searches by default. Two settings control this:

  • For all clients (account-wide): Go to Settings → Display → Nutrition and turn on Show custom foods in search.
  • For a single client only: Open the client, go to their nutrition settings, and turn on Show custom foods in search there.

Things to watch out for

  • Food name and Brand must each be 100 characters or fewer.
  • Notes must be 300 characters or fewer.
  • Each macro and micronutrient value must be between 0 and 9999. Serving size must be greater than 0 and less than 100000.
  • In a team workspace, custom foods belong to the head coach's library and are shared across the whole team — a custom food created by a sub-coach is added to the same shared list.
