How do I use steps, sleep, and weight from health data in habits and metrics?

Set up habits and a Weight metric so a client's synced steps, sleep and weight log themselves, and know how the automatic matching works.

Synced health data doesn't only sit on the Integrations tab. Steps and sleep can fill in a client's habits, and weight lands in their Weight progress metric, with no manual logging on either side.

The routing is identical whether the client's data comes from Apple Health or Health Connect. There's no picker and no platform setting — the link is chosen from how the habit is set up.

Get a client's steps into a habit

  1. Make sure the client has connected Apple Health or Health Connect on their phone.
  2. Assign them a habit measured in steps — for example "10,000 steps daily".
  3. Each day's step count logs itself on the next sync.

From Health Connect the count is the day's combined total across the client's phone, watch and wearable apps, as Health Connect calculates it. That matches the Health Connect app rather than the wearable's own app.

Get a client's sleep into a habit

  1. Assign the client a habit measured in hours whose name contains "sleep" or "slept" — for example "Sleep 8 hours".
  2. Hours slept log themselves each night.

Sleep is attributed to the wake-up day — the morning the session ended, not the night it started. A night from Tuesday into Wednesday shows on Wednesday. Overlapping records from several devices are merged so time isn't double-counted. From Health Connect, only the asleep stages count when the client's device records stages; a device recording just start and end counts the whole session.

What the matching rules are

DataHabit it links toIf there's no match
StepsAny habit measured in stepsSteps appear on the Integrations charts only
SleepAny habit measured in hours with "sleep" or "slept" in its nameSleep appears on the Integrations charts only

Any matching habit that hasn't been deleted can be linked, including one whose assignment has already ended. When you assign a matching habit later, the next sync backfills its history in full.

Get a client's weight into their progress metrics

Synced weight is written into the client's Weight progress metric, stored in both kg and lb, so it shows in your Metrics view of their progress alongside the Integrations tab's Weight card. From Health Connect it's the day's average of their weight readings.

Weight only lands in progress metrics when the client already has a Weight metric set up. Without one, it appears on the Integrations charts only.

Things to watch out for

  • The synced value sets the day's total for a linked habit, replacing anything the client or you logged manually that day and clearing the entry's note. There's no marker distinguishing synced values from manual ones, and no way to protect a manual entry on a synced habit.
  • If you delete the linked habit, syncing moves to another matching habit if the client has one — backfilling its history in full. If there's no other match, steps or sleep quietly stop flowing into habits, with no error shown to you or the client.
  • A habit called "Rest well" measured in hours won't match, and neither will a sleep habit measured in another unit. The name must contain "sleep" or "slept" and the unit must be hours.
  • Today's numbers keep updating until the day is over, so a habit's value for the current day can change between syncs.
  • Reconnecting on a new phone backfills history again, which re-sets those days' habit values from the platform's data.
