To add alternate exercises, open the workout in the workout builder, use the three-dot menu on the exercise card, and pick replacements from the exercise library. The client then selects the alternate they want when they log the workout in the mobile app.
Steps
- Click Workouts in the left sidebar.
- Open the workout you want to edit.
- Find the exercise you want to add an alternate for.
- Click the three-dot (…) menu on the right of the exercise card.
- Select Add Alternates from the dropdown.
- In the Add alternatives modal, type the name of the exercise you want to offer as an alternate.
- Click the + button next to each exercise you want to attach. The button at the bottom updates to show how many you've selected.
- Click Add X exercise(s) at the bottom of the modal.
- Click Save workout in the top right.
After saving, the exercise card shows an Alternate Exercises section listing every alternate you've attached.
Adding more than one alternate
You can attach multiple alternates to the same exercise. Select all of them in the Add alternatives modal before clicking Add X exercises — they'll all be saved at once.
How clients use alternates
Clients pick which exercise to perform — the primary or one of the alternates — from their mobile app when they log the workout. Alternates carry no separate sets, reps, or weights; the parameters you set on the primary exercise are used.
Things to watch out for
- Alternate selection only happens in the client mobile app. There is no way to choose an alternate from the web logging flow, so coaches logging a session on the web cannot swap to an alternate mid-session.
- Alternates are not shown in the workout side panel on the client's calendar. To see which alternates are configured for an assigned workout, open the workout in the workout builder.
- Starting coach logging on the web locks the client out of that workout on their mobile app until you finish or abort the session. If you want the client to pick an alternate themselves, let them log the workout on their phone instead of logging on their behalf.
