How do I personalize exercise instructions?

Edit instructions on a custom exercise from the Exercise Editor. For system exercises, copy them to custom first. For one-off tweaks, add a note on the exercise inside a workout.

To personalize an exercise's instructions, open the exercise in the Exercise Editor and edit the Instructions list. Only custom exercises are editable — system exercises are read-only, but you can copy them to your custom exercises and edit the copy.

Edit a custom exercise's instructions

  1. Click Exercises in the left sidebar.
  2. Click the custom exercise you want to edit.
  3. In the editor, scroll to the Instructions section.
  4. Edit the existing instruction lines, add new ones (up to 20), or remove any you don't need.
  5. Click Save exercise in the top-right.

Every workout that uses this exercise will show the updated instructions to the client the next time they open it.

Personalize a system exercise

System exercises ship with Fitsly and can't be edited directly. To change their instructions, copy the exercise to your custom library first.

  1. Click Exercises in the left sidebar.
  2. Click the system exercise you want to copy. The System Exercise modal opens with a banner: "This is a system exercise. You cannot edit it, but you can copy it to your custom exercises and modify the copy."
  3. Click Copy to Custom in the modal footer. A duplicate is created in your custom exercises with the same name, video, and instructions.
  4. Open the new custom copy from the Exercises list and edit its instructions in the Exercise Editor. Save when done.

You'll now have two versions in your library: the original system exercise (read-only) and your custom copy (fully editable). When building workouts, pick your custom copy to use your edited instructions.

Where else can instructions be personalized?

The Exercise Editor is the only place to change the exercise's main instructions. But you can add a per-workout note on any exercise inside the workout editor without changing the exercise itself.

  1. Open a workout in the workout editor.
  2. Click the exercise card for the exercise you want to add a note to.
  3. Scroll to the Notes section and click Add note.
  4. Type your note. The modal explains: "Each note acts as a separate paragraph — you can create multiple notes to break up large blocks of text and make your instructions easier to read."
  5. Click Add note to save it.

Notes appear to the client when they view the exercise in that specific workout. Use notes for one-off cues, weight targets, or technique reminders — anything you don't want to bake into the exercise's main instructions across every workout.

Things to watch out for

  • System exercises are read-only. The "Copy to Custom" button is the only way to get an editable version.
  • Editing a custom exercise updates instructions for every workout that uses it, including past workouts and assignments. To change instructions for just one workout, use a per-workout note instead.
  • Per-workout notes live on the exercise card inside the workout. They don't follow the exercise into other workouts.
  • The Exercise Editor's Instructions field caps out at 20 instruction lines. Use notes inside a workout for longer cues if you hit the cap.
  • Copying a system exercise to custom doesn't link the two. Future updates Fitsly makes to the system exercise won't flow into your copy.
